Deacon

Deacon poster

It was an overheard conversation at a gallery art installation, Patrick inveigling his way into the confidence of “the Missionary,” going through a divorce and eager to unburden to a sympathetic ear without considering what personal information might be gleaned, the details of his home and life passed to photographer Deacon to scope the joint and assess the security setup and the best routes of access and escape.

The details of what is expected unclear, Deacon makes it plain that he’ll check out the job but he’s not a killer, but his memory of the reconnaissance is also unclear, photos on the roll of film he doesn’t recall shooting, memories of something he saw which disturbed him but of which he kept no evidence, his regrets at accepting the job coming too late to untangle himself.

Deacon; Patrick (Kyree Covington) meets the Missionary (Eric Gravez) at an art installation.

A short mystery thriller directed by Purav Virdi, Cut & Run’s Rigo Garay is the titular petty thief and photographer Deacon, Kyree Covington his well-to-do friend Patrick who runs in different circles, Laura Hetherington the girl he sees in the park, Vanessa, Eric Gravez “the Missionary” whose intentions are far from saving the unfortunate, and Kitty Lever the unnamed wife, object of his Biblical wrath.

Glimpes through the illuminated upstairs window playing the harp, the dark house harbours secrets but Deacon feels like a premise which has not quite translated, the two strands of the break in and the walk in the park and its talk of childhood memories jammed together uncomfortably with their connection as hazy as the relationships of the characters and their fates, the few moments as the malignant presence manifests effective but their impact lost without a stronger context, the dialogue dubbed post-production adding a ghostly quality but no clearer meaning.
