Dr Mew’s Sci-Fi Cabaret
It’s a welcome return to the Fringe for S J Wyatt, still bipolar, still bisexual, still dyslexic, still dyspraxic and still dressed in TARDIS blue, sequins and a lamp hat, and still a socialist, which means that this year rather than a solo storytelling performance she is bringing friends with her and offering them a platform, even Dr Mew.
Formerly a “not exactly racist” human called Clive who through a series of unusual but very particular circumstances was transformed into a cat, they are hosts of Dr Mew’s Sci-Fi Cabaret, an hour long showcase of strange and science fiction themed shows or those of appropriate adjacent interests performing elsewhere in the city, the lineup changing every day.
Her first warm up for her own show Mistranslated having only just arrived from Italy, multilingual Erica Jean brings energy and space llama leggings, brought up by astronomer parents whose home observatory allowed her to “observe urban light pollution,” while Marco Del Valle basks in bad taste literary jokes, “a brown boy dressed in British vintage clothing, like the world’s gayest coloniser.”
Del Valle speaking of the need for an Asian Doctor Who, perhaps with an eye on the role, final act and very much dressed for the occasion in shimmering cape and sequinned lycra bodysuit is Alicia Queen performing an excerpt from Blip Blarp: An Alien Love Story, her plans to take over the planet frustrated by the requirement of having to interact romantically with humans, strange but entertaining company indeed.
