Coyote vs. Acme
He is, in his eccentric, foolhardy and self-destructive way, an admirable creature, determined, resilient, focused, inventive, never dissuaded despite setbacks, defeats and injury from the sole goal upon which he has built his life, Wile E Coyote spending his days in the hot and unforgiving desert sunshine pursing his nemesis, the elusive Road Runner baiting him but always just out of reach, a prize he can never win.
There is, however, another factor in his failure: the equipment supplied by the Acme corporation. Is it improperly used, or is it poorly manufactured and tested? Approaching the law firm of Avery, Jones and Maltese to represent him, Mister Coyote is a difficult client, non-verbal but effusive in his gestures, persuading Kevin Avery to pursue the case beyond the nominal initial offer made to settle the case, Acme lawyer Buddy Crane drawing a battle line in the courtroom.
In development since 2018 and with live action filming taking place in early 2022, it has been a long trek to bring Coyote vs. Acme to the screen, directed by Dave Green from a screenplay by Samy Burch with story contributions from James Gunn and Jeremy Slater, bringing together a whole roster of familiar Looney Tunes characters beyond the headliners of Wile E Coyote and Road Runner and paying homage to familiar moments from classic cartoons alongside a cast led by Will Forte as Kevin, Lana Condor as his niece Paige and John Cena as Buddy.
A film as manic as the products of the legendary fictitious corporation it investigates, from lion in a can and dehydrated boulders to portable holes which recall the handy emergency exits found in the Yellow Submarine, sidetracked by a wrong turn at Albuquerque, possibly distracted by the annual carrot festival, but for pressure from an audience eager and willing to support the project Coyote vs. Acme might not have been seen at all.
Warner Bros. Discovery opting to use the film as a tax write-off similar to Batgirl, that would have been a foolish and short-sighted move, as alongside The Day the Earth Blew Up it demonstrates the longevity of the roster of ageless and indestructible characters as well as their adaptability as participants in a live action arena, as with Looney Tunes: Back in Action or Amblin’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit the dynamic interaction of the blended worlds sold by the cast who never treat their post-production co-stars as other than equals.
The wily and unrepentant coyote making up for what he lacks in brains with cunning expressed by his crafty face and twitchy ears, the film sees him reevaluating his relationships, with Acme to whom he thinks he is dependent but who have failed to match his loyalty, and with the object of his pursuit, a prize more of value in what it might represent than than in the value of winning it, an aspiration which has obliged him to try harder and never give up, his uncatchable quarry perhaps his most valuable friend, the Coyote way unconventional but inspirational.
