Red Gloves

New York City, the nineteen eighties, and in a brightly lit and airy loft studio dance teacher Madame Olivia put the students through their routines, making them sweat their way closer to their dream career, perhaps even fame, while in the corner assistant Cooper scowls silently, unnoticed except when needed for a menial task, watching the girls…

Feeling the music but oblivious to the eyes of the creep who was sat in the corner, Linda stays late, working her routines to perfection after dark, alone in the studio but not alone in the building, a figure approaching up the stairs, wearing red gloves and carrying a razor…

A short slasher horror, Red Gloves is written and directed by Santiago Saba Salem based on Drew Maxwell Weiss’ story, and credit is also due to cinematographer Leo Zhang and choreographer Robert McBay as well as the cast, with Isabelle Phillips, Ruth Kavanagh and Ed Malone as Linda, Olivia and Cooper alongside Madison Grace Johnson, Maya Tsuruki-Holden, Olivia Greco and Alexandra Osorio as Mary, Lucy, Scarlet and Carmen.

A loving homage to the iconic stylings, situations, stalking and shocks of giallo and most particularly Suspiria with the sacrifices demanded by its prestigious dance academy, it seems to be a competent but unoriginal performance of the expected steps until the final delicious twist, the chorus line keeping their eyes on top billing.
